Being Obvious

Women have a wonderful instinct about things. They can discover everything except the obvious.

This is true. That is why women love to go shopping. Not to expressly buy anything; that would be to miss the whole point of the exercise. We go shopping to look at the obvious, what's in front of us, what's attracting our attention, our gaze.

Shopping reminds us to look at the obvious--the price tag, the size, the silhouette of a dress, the curve of a handbag, the heel of a shoe. The obvious should make us look good. Beyond that, it really doesn't matter.

We are also more attracted to what's inside, rather than what's on the outside. A bag lined with suede inside will find an owner faster than one with interior polyester pockets.

Ditto with men. That's why Marilyn Monroe married Arthur Miller, and Christie Brinkley married Billy Joel.
